Tupac Amaru Shakur Way Street Rededication and Peace Pole Planting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott and the City of Baltimore to Rededicate Greenmount Avenue Block in Honor of the Shakur Family

Sekyiwa Shakur and Mayor Scott to Join Community in Historic Ceremony Baltimore, MD — May 8, 2026

The Mayor’s Office of Arts Culture and Entertainment (MOACE) will hold a rededication ceremony honoring the stretch of Greenmount Avenue where Afeni, Tupac, and Sekyiwa Shakur made their home during one of the most formative chapters in the family’s life. The ceremony will take place Friday, May 8, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and is open to the public. Later that evening, the Baltimore community can continue the celebration of Tupac’s life and legacy as the Orioles distribute a commemorative Tupac bobblehead giveaway for 20,000 fans when they host the Athletics at 7:05 p.m.

“Dedicating this block to Tupac and the entire Shakur family honors their lasting impact on our city,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. “Baltimore is proud that Tupac spent so many of his formative years here, and we are grateful that his family has continued to invest and uplift our communities, especially our young people.”

In 1984, Afeni Shakur moved her family into a brick row house at 3955 Greenmount Avenue in Baltimore’s Pen Lucy neighborhood. It was here that Tupac Shakur enrolled at the Baltimore School for the Arts, and studied acting, poetry, jazz, and ballet. Tupac himself said of those years: “I loved my classes. We were exposed to everything, theater, ballet, listening to different types of music…I would have been a totally different person had I not been exposed to these things.”

The rededication honors not only Tupac’s legacy and his continued impact on the world more than 30 years after his untimely passing, but the full arc of the Shakur family’s connection to Baltimore — Afeni’s resilience as a mother, activist, and community anchor, and Sekyiwa’s own life shaped by the same neighborhood, the same home and her commitment to community service.

“To be honest, Baltimore was scary to me as a little girl but my mother [Afeni Shakur] and my brother [Tupac Amaru Shakur] made me feel safe and protected.” said Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur. “We were here from when I was 8 until I was 12 years old, and I’m so happy to be able to return for this experience. I’m so happy to be able to give and share love with our community. I remember our mom taking us to baseball games for much needed breaks, playing and hanging out with my brother and my cousins in Mullan Park. He was so talented and knew that all he needed was an opportunity to show it, and it was there, in Mullan Park, that he promised that one day we would have a foundation to support talented kids like us, who just needed the opportunity to shine.”

The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation — founded in 1997 by Afeni Shakur and now led by Sekyiwa — continues the family’s commitment to mental health, creative arts education, prison reform, domestic violence, social justice and community healing. The foundation’s work carries forward the values Afeni instilled on Greenmount Avenue: creativity is resistance, community is survival, and the people most overlooked by the world have the most to offer it.

The Street Rededication event, initially conceptualized by LeRoy McCarthy, Hip Hop Historian from Heterodoxx Inc., will feature performances from the Baltimore School for the Arts, Roland Park Elementary/Middle School, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, appearances from representatives of the Baltimore Orioles, and the installation of a Peace Pole, an initiative of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, which promotes Peace & Resolution as an alternative to community violence. Mayor Brandon Scott will speak at the ceremony alongside Sekyiwa Shakur, President of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, who will offer reflections on the family’s time in the city. Baltimore community members and Pen Lucy neighbors are encouraged to attend.

To exemplify his impact on pop culture and society in Baltimore and far beyond, fans of Tupac and the Orioles can receive the Tupac bobblehead, featuring his likeness in a black and orange Orioles jersey, at Friday night’s game against the Athletics at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at Orioles.com/Tickets.

“We’re grateful to the Afeni Shakur Estate and The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation for working in lockstep to honor Tupac, as we join them for the rededication ceremony, and throughout the entire bobblehead ideation and creation process,” shared Mark Fine, Orioles Chief Marketing Officer. “The response has been extraordinary, and honored to celebrate his life and legacy with the Baltimore community in such a meaningful way.”
